Native Breed Cattle

We believe traditional British cattle breeds can stand up to the elements even when out wintered, and they graze sites of nature conservation value.

Most of our cows calve in spring outside on land above 1,100 ft. Cows are put on fells to encourage re-generation by eating the moor grass.

Cattle grazing at deepclough Farm

They are born and bred on farm and they stay there through to slaughter at around 30 months of age , when they are taken to a local abattoir to reduce stress.

The native cows we run are Blue Greys, Galloway, Cross Highland and pure Highland.

They are smaller and lighter in weight causing less damage to areas of rough grazing. They excel as a good hill suckler cow as they are hardy, easy to maintain, fertile and prolific and have excellent mothering abilities.
